The Atlanta Ol Skool Drummers are always seeking new members. We are an All-Star traditional HBCU show-style marching percussion section. We are a fraternal organization, so all new members are required to earn their AOS letters. You start at "A", you earn the "O" when you learn most of our cadences & style, and you earn the "S" when you complete the season. We openly welcome anyone that meet the requirements listed below.
We are an adult marching percussion section so all members must be at least 18 years old and have completed high school. We do offer mentorship and training for people under 18. You have to be in good physical condition. This just simply means you have to be able to march and play for the entirety of our performances in hot, cold, or sometimes inclement weather.
We currently have over 700+ years of experience in our group. Although we love having people with years of marching percussion experience, it is not a requirement. If you are willing to meet all of the other requirements listed here and you are teachable you can join. However, all new members may be required to play wherever the current need is for the benefit of the team.
You must be willing to learn our style & concept of playing. Our mission is the preservation of the art of traditional marching percussion as it relates to the Atlanta Ol Skool. This includes but is not limited to drum cadences, instruments, sticking, marching, etc. Our art is mostly taught by live demonstration and word of mouth.
You must have self-discipline, positive attitude, and a love for drumming. You must also be a citizen in good standings with your community and can't be currently under investigation of a major crime. We are governed by Robert's Rules of Order during meeting sessions and we abide by the "golden rule" to treat others how you would like to be treated. You are also required to adhere to the leadership structure of the section. Any violations that are unbecoming of you may result in suspension or expulsion via an unanimous decision of the group.
Our official colors are black, silver, and white. We have custom designed shirts and jogging suits that can be purchased online through Champion Sports. We also wear black cargo shorts in the summer season with our official t-shirts. Black sneakers or boots are the official footwear.
You have to purchase your own instrument. It can be new or used. We use low-torqued 14"-15" snares with 3S white or taped drumsticks, 15"-16" leg tenors & toms with Ludwig tenor mallets, 28"-30" scotch and wide basses with Ludwig or Blackjack bass mallets, and 16"-20" cymbals. All drums must be chrome or chrome wrapped for performances.
Used drums can be purchase from your local music store, Ebay, Amazon, or from us if available. We know how to find the best deals. Additionally, all drum straps must be black. No other percussion instruments are permitted.
